Wategos Residence

Wategos Residence is a considered coastal refresh of one of Wategos’ earlier homes, originally constructed in 1964 on Brownell Drive overlooking the bay. As one of the first residences built in this tightly held enclave, the property holds a quiet piece of Byron Bay’s architectural history.

Over time, the home had undergone several disconnected renovations that lacked cohesion. With a complete rebuild planned for 2026, this project was approached as a strategic three-year transformation — designed to bring clarity, comfort and consistency to the interiors prior to construction.

Rather than undertake major structural changes, the focus was on refinement. A restrained, tonal palette was introduced to unify previously competing finishes, allowing natural light and ocean views to take precedence. Layers of linen, warm timber and soft neutrals create a relaxed yet elevated atmosphere, grounded in simplicity and coastal ease.

Existing architectural elements were edited rather than replaced, ensuring the investment remained proportionate to the home’s limited lifespan. Furnishings and finishes were selected with longevity in mind — contemporary yet timeless pieces that enhance daily living while remaining adaptable for the future build.

The result is a cohesive and comfortable coastal retreat — thoughtfully resolved for its interim chapter while honouring the history of one of Wategos’ original homes.
